In Honor
Of Al Parker
AAA Travel, the sponsor of the Al Parker Tournament, purchased the
beautiful plaque on the right shown in the background that honors
the winners of the yearly Championship of the Al Parker Tournament.
This Championship is comprised of any player who finishes in first
through fourth place any month of the previous year and is held in
October.
-----

Al and Lin Parker admire the plaque on the left presented to Al for his long
and
dedicated service to Billiards in running leagues and tournaments.
The once-a-month Thursday tournament was eventually renamed
the Al Parker Monthly 8-Ball Tournament. This plaque was purchased
from a collection by some of the guys at Silverlake.

Jack Ryan (right), is congratulated by Al for winning this
year's (2006) Championship tournament for the fifth time. With all the
talent here in The Villages, that is quite an achievement

Many of the recognized sports played at The Villages have a
handicap system
which gives players of different skill levels a chance to successfully compete
in that sport.
Billiards (Pocket Pool) is a sport that is lacking any handicap system to "level
the playing field".
There are many billiard leagues and tournaments that are scheduled on a regular
bases.
and
There are many skill levels of all the billiard players here at The Villages.
so
A simple Handicap System needs to be incorporated to "level the playing field"
in these events.
A Handicap Committee headed by Don "The Preacher" Feeney, our resident Pro
Instructor and player,
was formed to come up with a simple handicapping system that could be
applied to all villages pool players.
The Handicap Evaluation System was created.
It consists of 7 drills which use the skills of speed control, good stroke,
pocketing balls and positional play.
These drills (as web pages) may be printed to your printer.

Help Support Our
Villages Billiards Players
Until recently The Villages Recreation Department used to give to the
various games tournaments
free coffee, orange juice, pastries and at one time even the lunches.
This is no longer true. They will no longer support us with free goodies.
If we wish to continue to have beverages and goodies they need to be paid
by the resident participants or from the games entry fees.
The Villages Billiard Club is now seeking support from outside sources, the VBC
would reciprocate by placing Ads from these source on our pages.
Any interested parties please email Al Brinson

NEW VOLUNTEER POSITIONS CREATED.
RESIDENT CONTACTS FOR RECREATION CENTERS
(BILLIARDS):
A request was made by the Recreation Department to the
Billiards Council
to have one designated resident act as a single point of
contact.
They will work directly with the Recreation Director of that
center.
These volunteers will have their names posted at each center so
others
will know who to contact. The primary job of these contacts is to
alert
Rec Directors of small things that need to be addressed, like light
bulbs,
loose pockets on the tables, chalk needed, etc.
Anything major
would be submitted by the resident contact to the Council
and listed on a
Council Request Form to inform The Recreation Department.

RULE AWARENESS.
All Official BCA Rules can be found
HERE
While playing in the Tuesday mixed league at Chatham I had the wining shot at the 8 ball for the last game which was already well centred inside of the jaws of the pocket. With a poor stroke I could have easily followed the 8 ball with the cue ball into the pocket. Loss of game!
While preparing to make the shot I see my male opponent unscrewing his cue stick.
I stopped and approached him and advised him that he should be aware that there is a rule that unscrewing his stick before the game is over is considered a concession and poor sportsmanship and not to do it. He replied that there is no such rule and asked me to show it to him. I told him I would and that I was not calling him on it, just that he should be aware of the rule.
Here is the rule and below is where it can be found.
1.14 CONCESSION. If a player concedes he loses the game. The unscrewing of a jointed cue stick, except to replace a shaft is considered to be a concession. No warning from the referee is required. (Underline emphasis is mine)
This rule is not well known so be a sport if someone who is unaware of it and if they say ”No such rule” just tell them where they can see it in black and white.
Reference:
The Billiard Congress of America Official Rules
Rules for Tournament Play
“The following rules concern the play, scoring, officiating and responsibilities for tournament competition in all pocket billiard games.
However, the precepts and principles of these rules are to be considered part of the games’ General Rules and should be applied as appropriate to all play, whether or not a formal tournament.”
----------------------------------
I thoroughly enjoy the game, I enjoy instructing, I get the same kick a student does when they execute a great draw stroke for the first time or learns how to stop the cue for position or learns how important speed is on a bank shot. Getting to shoot a decent stick is just part of the game, knowing the rules and proper etiquette is the other part of the game that let’s us all really enjoy this sport.
